Lymphoedema is a condition in which excess fluid builds up in the soft body tissues, usually as a result of a compromised lymphatic system. While lymphoedema is most commonly seen in the arms or legs, it can also occur in other areas such as the torso, head and neck, face, or genitals. The lymphatic system helps remove excess fluid from body tissue and filter out toxins and debris. When this system becomes damaged or obstructed fluid builds up and causes swelling.
There are 2 kinds of lymphoedema:
• Primary lymphoedema, which impacts the lymphatic system, is caused by defective genes. It can develop at any age but typically begins early on in life.
• Secondary lymphoedema is commonly a result of any damage or harm caused to the lymphatic system. It can be triggered by things such as cancer treatment, injury, or a lack of movement.
The severity and timeline of symptoms will depend on the type of lymphoedema you have, each case is unique and depends on lifestyle and health conditions. However, in most cases symptoms can include the following:
• Trouble with movement
• Skin infections
• Growths on the skin
• Fluid leaking through the skin
